November 16, 2020, São Paulo – Suzano, world leader eucalyptus pulp producer and one of the largest companies in Latin America, has been selected to join the well-known Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) under the emerging market category . The Dow Jones Sustainability Index is one of the most comprehensive benchmarks for responsible companies in the world. It was founded in 1999 to identify companies with the best sustainable development practices by evaluating several economic, environmental and social criteria, with a focus on creating long-term value for shareholders.

Susano’s addition is a recognition of his role as a global leader in tackling climate change, protecting natural habitats, and having a positive impact on communities and individuals. Only 10 other Brazilian companies are included in the Emerging Markets Index, which consists of 10% of the best companies in each industry out of the 800 largest companies in 20 emerging markets. The index is composed of sustainability indicators for emerging markets determined by S&P Global through the Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA). The annual selection process is externally audited by Deloitte.

Sukarno’s Chief Financial Officer and Chief Information Officer Marcelo Bacchi said: “Being included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index is a great honor for Sukarno. The unremitting efforts made by the benefit are recognized on the global stage.

“Looking forward, we will continue to work to ensure that our mission and corporate social responsibility activities are not only the best practices of the pulp and paper industry, but also the best practices of other leading global companies and organizations.”

Earlier this year, Suzano announced a number of long-term goals, including (but not limited to) the following commitments by 2030: to remove 40 million tons of additional carbon from the atmosphere; to replace 1,000 tons of carbon globally with products from renewable biological resources 10,000 tons of plastic and petroleum products; and help 200,000 people out of poverty through employment and income-generating projects in target areas in Brazil.
